Mike,
I removed a spring from my 1956 Oldsmobile 98 to find out if it was tangential or square and I’m a bit confused with what I see.The top end of my spring is definitely square as it sits perfectly flush on a flat surface but the bottom end I’m not so sure.
If I set it on the ground it wobbles and sometimes falls over.
It even looks different from the top end.
So my question is can a spring be both tangential and square at the same time?
Thanks Al
Al,
Yes it is possible and very common for a coil spring to have two different ends.
In addition to square and tangential ends, there is also a Pigtail style end.
Just as the name implies, pigtail, the end winds smaller than the body of the springs.
Go see some pictures and get a more complete education about coil spring ends in our Spring Tech 101 booklet and our Cutting Coil Springs page.
