Tech Question - My Springs Are Falling Out

I have a set of your rear coil springs I need to return.
My mechanic installed them and said they can fall out if the car is jacked up too high.
He says this is not right because he had to really work to get the old ones out.
He did say the new springs are just about the same height as the old ones but something is not right.
Do I need anything to return them?

On most rear straight axle cars, the coil springs simply sits on a mounting surface with nothing to hold the springs to the axle except for the weight of the vehicle. They are this way right out of the factory.

What happens over time is road debris and temperature changes causes the spring to bond by way of junk and rust to the upper and lower mounting plates so when the spring is changed you have to work at getting it out. And if the suspension uses a rubber isolator pad between the spring and the mounting plate the amount of effort required to get the old spring out can multiply many times over.

I’ll just bet if your mechanic cleaned off the old spring and re-installed it, it too would fall out when the car was jacked up.

This is nothing to be concerned about because the axle does not get far enough away from the vehicle's body under normal driving conditions.

So no need to return them, have your man install them and enjoy the comfort of your new and improved ride. - Mike
