Tech Question - '56 Belair Rear

Mike,

I have a stock 1956 Belair which is sitting kind of low in the rear. I have installed new Load Leveler shocks that raised the rear a little, but I need to raise rear another 1-2 Inches. Can this be done with just adding a leaf? The original springs appear to be OK, she is just a little low for the Cragar rims and tires on the rear. I am trying to do this the less cost as possible.

Larry,

Yes, adding an extra leaf would get you up another Inch or so. However doing so will stiffen the springs causing a harsh ride.

My concern is with what you say about what happened when you installed the Load Level shocks (shocks with coil springs). If doing so raised the rear of your car, then I'll bet that the springs are shot.

Go to Reusing Old Leaves and look at the pictures. If your springs look any thing like these, don't waste your money trying to do anything with the old springs. Replace them with new ones, you will be much happier with the outcome.
