The American – the economy king - received new styling for 1961. The car was even more compact than the previous model. Features included all-welded, single unit–body construction, deep-dip rust proofing and a ceramic armored muffler and tailpipe - guaranteed to the original owner for the life of the car. The wheelbase was still 100 inches. Styling included a new trapezoid grille, made of perforated aluminum lattice work. The hood carried a stand-up "R" ornament. The rear-end design featured circular tail lamps and the optional backup lamps were round. Additionally, a new two-door convertible was offered.
